Dr James Price
Specialty Research Co-Lead Infection - National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR)

Dr James Price graduated in Medicine from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 2005. He was awarded a Walport NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship during which he completed a PhD focusing on the application of whole-genome sequencing to investigate nosocomial Staphylococcus aureus infections. In 2014, he was appointed NIHR Clinical Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, continuing to develop his research on the prevention of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.

In 2019, following completion of specialist training in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, James was appointed Consultant in Infection at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where he subsequently became Director of Infection Prevention and Control. He also held the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Healthcare-associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance at Imperial College London.

In 2022, James re-joined Brighton and Sussex Medical School as Associate Professor and was appointed Honorary Consultant in Infection at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. His current research focuses on the translation of genomics and data to inform infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable approaches to infection prevention and control to support the decarbonisation of healthcare. In 2024 James co-founded and is Director of the Sussex Centre of Infection and Antimicrobial Research, and in 2025 he was appointed as Academic Director of the Sussex Health and Care Research Partnership.

James has authored research that has received over 6,300 citations (h-index 32) and has been recognised with several prestigious national and international awards, including the Barnett Christie Prize Lecture, the Royal College of Pathologists Research Medal in Microbiology, the ESCMID Young Investigator Award, the Healthcare Infection Society Early Career Award, and a National Clinical Impact Award.

He is Secretary of the Healthcare Infection Society, where he also chairs the Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal College of Physicians, and Advance Higher Education. Nationally, he is an active member of NHS England’s Infection Prevention and Control Programme Group and served as an advisor to the UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) hospital-onset COVID-19 infection subgroup. Internationally, he represents the UK on the advisory board of the European Committee of Infection Control (EUCIC).
