Medicus Health Becomes First New GP IT System in 25 Years Approved by NHS England

NHS England has approved its first new core clinical IT system for general practices in a quarter of a century, marking a major milestone in the digital transformation of primary care.
The system, developed by Medicus Health, is already live at four early adopter sites, with more than 25 Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) now exploring pathways to support its broader adoption.
It is the first product to be fully assured through NHS England’s Tech Innovation Framework, a rigorous vetting process that ensures new technologies meet standards for information governance, clinical safety, and data protection, while integrating seamlessly with NHS infrastructure.
The cloud-based platform is designed to improve interoperability across health settings—from GP practices to care homes and vaccination centres—and supports flexible access via devices like tablets.
This capability is expected to enhance neighbourhood care delivery and empower clinicians to meet patients’ needs more efficiently.
Medicus Health has achieved integration with 24 national NHS services, including the Electronic Prescription Service, NHS e-Referral Service, and the NHS App.
It is also the first system to implement five new national open standards for information exchange, reinforcing its future-readiness and alignment with NHS digital priorities.
Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS national director of primary care and community services, called the approval a transformative moment: “This new generation of systems is the first shake-up of the GP IT market we have seen in a quarter of a century. This shift will help unlock more modern, joined-up care for patients and help our staff to work better and smarter.”
Looking ahead, NHS England anticipates that additional core IT systems meeting the Tech Innovation Framework standards will become available by April 2026, offering viable alternatives to incumbent platforms like EMIS Web, TPP SystmOne, and Cegedim InPS Vision.
