Life Sciences Innovation

Britain has a long and proud history of Life Science innovation and is home to some of the world’s most powerful discoveries and developments. The life sciences sector is undergoing a scientific and technological revolution, from the use of AI to discover new drugs, to the mRNA platform for new vaccines and breakthroughs in gene editing, new technologies are transforming the development of new medicines and vaccines to prevent and treat disease.

In October 2024, the UK government published the Industrial Strategy Green Paper, life sciences are one of eight growth sectors that the government has identified to form part of the new ten-year industrial strategy and UK’s commitment to driving economic growth.

There are ambitious plans to modernise the NHS and make it a better innovation partner for academia and industry. The Government has already announced it has secured £400 million of private investment to boost clinical trials, creating 18 new clinical trial hubs across the UK. Around 20% of this funding will also be used to create sustainable manufacturing innovation which will enhance the UK’s global competitiveness. The NHS strategy also includes plans to harness and utilise the UK’s wealth of health data through use of digital data and AI.

Collaboration between academic institutions, funders and industry players is vital for the translation of research into practical applications. More than 5,600 life sciences businesses already operate in the UK, including all of the top 25 global pharmaceutical companies and top 30 global medical technology companies. More than 300,000 people are directly employed in the industry and the UK is also a hub for global talent.

Life Sciences Innovation will discuss the UK Government’s plans to channel significant investment into the UK’s health and life sciences sector to kickstart economic growth and give patients earlier access to new treatments.

This conference will provide the platform for attendees from the NHS, health research communities and prominent members of the life sciences sector to discuss Investment in cutting-edge medicines research, the government’s mission to kickstart economic growth and build an NHS fit for the future by helping create a thriving environment for life sciences in the UK.
