Gloucestershire Hospitals Launches New Green Plan to Accelerate NHS Sustainability

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched a new Green Plan for 2026–2030, outlining its next steps to reduce carbon emissions, increase renewable energy use and deliver more sustainable healthcare across the county.

The strategy builds on significant environmental progress already made by the Trust. Since 2019, its overall carbon footprint has fallen by 5,546 tonnes of CO2 – equivalent to the annual emissions of around 3,000 average petrol cars.

Previous initiatives have included major estate decarbonisation projects, reductions in anaesthetic gas emissions and the expansion of digital healthcare services.

The new NHS Green Plan will embed sustainability further across clinical services, estates, procurement and day-to-day operations, while strengthening the resilience of healthcare services to the growing impacts of climate change.

Driving sustainable healthcare across Gloucestershire

Priorities for 2026–2030 include reducing energy consumption, increasing on-site renewable energy generation and modernising hospital buildings to improve energy efficiency.

The Trust will also expand sustainability training for staff, use digital technology to reduce waste and emissions, encourage active travel and work with suppliers to support more sustainable procurement.

Clinical pathways will continue to be reviewed to identify opportunities to reduce their environmental impact without compromising patient care, including the use of greener medicines where appropriate.

Will Cleary-Gray, Director of Improvement and Delivery at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said recent periods of extreme heat have highlighted the growing impact of climate change on communities and healthcare services.

He said sustainability had become a “golden thread” throughout the Trust’s strategy, influencing everything from medicines and patient care to hospital design, travel and procurement.

The Green Plan also places greater emphasis on prevention and community partnerships, recognising the connection between environmental conditions, population health and demand for NHS services.

With the NHS working towards its wider net zero ambitions, Gloucestershire Hospitals’ 2026–2030 Green Plan demonstrates how NHS trusts can combine carbon reduction with modernisation, resilience and improvements to patient care.

The Trust says the next four years will focus on turning these sustainability commitments into practical action across its hospitals and local communities.
