SUMMARY:Decarbonising the NHS
DESCRIPTION:This annual event now in it’s 2nd year brings together 250+ Heads\, Directors and Senior Managers of Sustainability\, Facilities\, Estates and Climate Change Policy from NHS trusts\, Integrated Care Board’s\, and primary care to discuss the progress has been made in strengthening healthcare resilience to the growing impacts of climate change \nThe NHS remains on track to achieve its interim target of an 80% reduction in direct emissions by 2032. There is much more work to do\, but recent investments in solar power\, battery storage\, energy efficiency and charging infrastructure will further reduce emissions while delivering substantial financial savings. \nDuring the last 5 years\, the NHS has not only seen emissions in the Carbon Footprint fall\, but it has witnessed a profound energy\, passion and pride from those NHS staff wanting to make a difference to this commitment. \nNHS England’s Delivering a Net Zero NHS Strategy is still considered to be the right approach to decarbonisation of the NHS. Over the next 5 years\, the NHS will maintain its commitment and accelerate the momentum created. \nThe NHS cannot achieve net zero in isolation – Decarbonisation of the electricity grid\, acceleration of low-carbon heating options\, wider electric vehicle infrastructure and more sustainable production of medicines are all essential. \nNow in its second year\, Decarbonising the NHS allows sector leaders\, innovators\, and changemakers to assess progress\, share case studies\, and discuss the ambition behind the NHS net zero journey. Delegates will understand where they can make a difference in their own trust or integrated care board and replicate evidence-based\, best practice models of care and delivery to wider parts of the health system.

SUMMARY:Developing NHS Innovation
DESCRIPTION:The UK’s vision is to be world leading in improving the lives of local people\, transforming care and boosting the economy through innovation. \nThe Covid-19 pandemic showed how a strong mission-driven industrial strategy\, involving government partnering with industry and academia\, could turn the tide on a pandemic. \nAs part of their life sciences plan\, The Government will develop an NHS innovation and adoption strategy in England. This will include a plan for procurement\, giving a clearer route to get products into the NHS coupled with reformed incentive structures to drive innovation and faster regulatory approval for new technology and medicines. \nThe proposals will strengthen the commitment contained in the NHS Long Term Plan to accelerate the uptake of selected innovative medical devices\, diagnostics\, and digital products. \nThe NHS is a large and complex system. Introducing new products and technologies can be daunting. Innovators must demonstrate the value of their healthcare product and navigate regulatory and procurement processes. For the NHS\, finding new innovations that meet its needs can be equally difficult. \nDeveloping NHS Innovation will bring together patient groups\, government bodies\, industry and NHS bodies\, working together to streamline the adoption of new innovations in healthcare. \nDelegates are invited share advice\, inspire success and build new connections. All with the aim to develop and scale impactful health and social care innovations for patient benefit.

SUMMARY:Decarbonising Life Sciences
DESCRIPTION:The health and life sciences industry is under growing pressure to address sustainability issues\, particularly carbon emissions. And while it has made some impressive progress in this regard\, the hardest challenge still remains. \nWhile the healthcare industry is responsible for saving millions of human lives\, its work comes at a considerable cost to the environment. \nThe healthcare industry accounts for 4.4 – 4.6% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and similar percentages of toxic air pollutants\, putting it up there with the most carbon-intensive service sectors in the industrialised world. \nThe NHS has committed to reaching net zero by 2040 for the emissions they control directly\, and by 2045 for the emissions they influence\, through the goods and services we they from our partners and suppliers. \nThis conference aims to align the life sciences sector with policy ambitions for achieving net zero. Stakeholders and policymakers will discuss strategic priorities and next steps\, including best practice and how challenges are being addressed by major organisations in life sciences.

SUMMARY:Health 100 – Decarbonising the NHS
DESCRIPTION:The NHS is responsible for 5% of carbon emissions in the UK and estate emissions comprise approximately 15% of the total NHS carbon emissions profile. With the NHS operating over 1\,000 hospitals and primary and tertiary buildings – the demand for net zero is significant within the sector. \nThe NHS is heading into an unprecedented financial crisis and will overspend on its budget as it overcomes the difficulties of Covid\, which has led to a prioritisation of delivering patient care. With an ageing estate that continues to require to be upgraded now is the time for the NHS to set long term plans in place which will set us on the path to meeting our targets. Whilst the Greener MHS Programme has set the blueprint for change\, a number of Trusts are at the infancy of their net zero plans. Now more than ever\, the NHS needs partners to help them support their objectives\, drawing on specialist expertise from the supply chain. \nAs we look to the future an imagine what the NHS will look like at 100\, we know that transitioning to a net zero health system won’t be easy and will require a consistent focus. This will include many interventions\, including overhauling their fleet\, which by 2033\, staff travel emissions will be reduced by 50% through a shift to more sustainable travel and by 2040 all fleet being decarbonised\, \nThis one day conference will explore decarbonising the NHS in more detail\, allowing for panel discussions and technical presentations outlining the vision for the future.

SUMMARY:Welsh Sustainability Awards 2024
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly\, society faces huge challenges\, such as climate change\, sustainable development\, optimising resources and reducing waste\, which require us all to make radical change. In Wales\, the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015\, from now on referred to as the WBFG Act\, provides us with a real opportunity to respond to these challenges. \nThe WBFG Act can help us future-proof our decisions\, so that we all do our bit to reduce our negative impact and maximise the positive social\, economic\, environmental and cultural impact of our daily work. It can support us to work better with people\, communities and each other to help us tackle and mitigate diverse problems we face. \nWe need to address climate change as a Health Service\, and with Net Zero Wales and A Climate Conscious Wales we know the direction the country is moving in. This has been further supported through the creation of the Welsh Government Health and Social Care Climate Emergency National Programme and the NHS Wales Decarbonisation Strategic Delivery Plan. Delivering a clear signal that we are responsible for managing our environmental and social impact.
